Micro Nutrients

We’ve already discussed Carbohydrates, fats and protein, but the body needs things, which we call micro nutrients.

FIBRE

This is the indigestible vegetable material found in fruit and vegetables. It provides bulk to the contents of the intestines, which helps in bowel movement. Lack of roughage in the diet can cause constipation, haemorrhoids and diverticulitis.

VITAMINS & MINERALS

Vitamins and minerals have many different and varied functions in the body, from boosting immunity, cell growth and helping blood clotting. The vitamins can be water-soluble or fat-soluble. The body stores fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D , E and K in the fat for future use. Unfortunately the body can’t store the water-soluble vitamins such as C and the B. This means we need a constant supply of them every day. A balanced diet, rich in fruit and vegetables can supply all the vitamins and minerals we need; it may be worth considering vitamin supplements if you think you may not be getting the required amount. However, be careful, as not all supplements are useful. Message me if you want any further information.

ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS

The human body requires 22 different amino acids for making proteins. The body can only manufacture 10 of these amino acids. They are called Essential Amino Acids, because we can only get them from our diet.  You get these essential amino acids from eating protein rich foods like meat and dairy. Again if you think you may not be getting the required amount, drop me a line.
