FAT

Do we need fat in our diet? Surely a fatty diet is bad, after all we want to lose fat. Read on and find out why we need the right sort of fat in controlled doses.
Fat-soluble vitamins need to be transported around the body. These are vitamins such as A, D, E and K, which will not dissolve in water but will dissolve in fat. In other words we need fat to be able to transport these essential vitamins.

Fats are also a source of essential fatty acids (which can’t be made in the body).
Fat is also another source of energy. It can also act as insulation, keeping our core body temperature at the right level.
Fat provides a cushion for the internal organs, stopping them from being damaged.
Fat has a key role in cell membrane structure. So we can’t live without fat.
However too much means we will put weight on. But it’s not as simple as that, because there are different types of fats.

Saturated Fats

These are derived from fatty meats, dairy and pastry. The problem with saturated fats is that they can increase the levels of low-density lipoproteins LDL or Bad cholesterol.

Trans-fats

Trans-fats are naturally found in low levels in meat and dairy produce. These also can raise cholesterol but are less of a problem than saturated fats.

Unsaturated Fats

Unsaturated fats are from oily fish, nuts, seeds, olive and sunflower oils. These types of fats are more likely to convert into High-density lipoproteins HDL or good cholesterol. Moderate alcohol consumption can also raise HDL, which will actually help remove LDL.

Supplements

If you are not sure if you are getting the correct amount of fatty acids, you can take them in the form of supplements such as Omega-3. If you would like further information on Omega-3 fatty acid supplements, please feel free to contact me.
